Confidence in Leadership: Willingness to Take Action / Risk Taking
One of the most challenging aspects of leadership can be knowing when to ‘play it safe’ versus when to take a risk. For some of us, the idea of stepping into the unknown and living with uncertainty can create all kinds of stress and anxiety. Join us for this episode as we normalize this experience and explore how these moments can actually support our sense of Confidence!
[Alicia Davis] Hello, I’m Alicia Davis.
[Stacie Watson] And I’m Stacie Watson.
[Alicia Davis]
We are the founders and coowners of Transformative Leadership Strategies, a coaching, training, and team-building company. And thank you so much for downloading our guide on Skyrocketing Your Confidence as a Leader. And we love this topic of confidence Stacie, because so many of our leaders in so many different roles, it comes up that they’re not feeling confident in one way or another. And we really wanted to create something that people could really use to help them, right?
[Stacie Watson] Yes, absolutely. You know, confidence, I think is one of those big leadership words that are so big, it’s hard to kind of put your arms around it sometimes I think it’s hard to even understand how it matters when it matters, and what to do when I’m not feeling particularly confident. And so one of the things we thought would be helpful is to take this big giant idea of a word, and break it into component parts or into factors so that we could actually look at sort of what are some of the things that make up the feeling of confidence? And what are some things we can do to really adjust or shift ourselves when we’re not feeling confident in a particular way? And that’s sort of the backbone of the guide, right?
[Alicia Davis] That’s right. So if you have the guide in front of you, you’ll see this is the confidence wheel. And if you don’t have the guide, you can pull it out later. And the factor that we’re going to focus on today is willingness to take action and risk-taking. Now those are kind of big words in and of themselves, right? Risk I think so many, so many of us, I know, for me, there are times when I’m willing to jump in and take action. And then there are times when I’m like, put the brakes on I am risk averse. So tell us about this one, Stacie, in terms of leadership.
[Stacie Watson] Well, you know, for leaders, I think this one can be tricky, because obviously, most leaders want to take calculated risks, meaning they don’t go around the willy-nilly indecision-making. And I think the challenge can be that we don’t often have all the information we would like. What we’re dealing with is kind of imperfect information. And yet, as they say, the show must go on, right, we must continue to make decisions and we set direction and move forward. And we may realize that we may have to shift and that’s okay, too. So there’s a certain element of confidence that’s very much connected to that ability to take that next step. And sometimes as it’s as simple as literally taking the next step doesn’t have to be the final step, or the most important step, but just doing a little bit of risk-taking just to be able to sort of ease into it can be helpful. This one is tricky, I think.
[Alicia Davis] Yeah, for sure. You know, and it shows up, you know, as you as you look at the scale and as you do the self-assessment, the one to 10 where one is, you know, I do not take risks I don’t want to jump in. And 10 is yeah, I can take them and I’m willing to go there. Wherever you are, be curious about it, and really celebrate what you already are doing. And if there’s a place that might be tweaked a little bit, you know, one aspect might be you know, I think, oftentimes we’re afraid to fail. Yeah, right. We all don’t like to make mistakes. And you know, to your point, like when we notice, oh, I’m stopping myself because I’m afraid of not making the right decision, or I’m afraid of what is my team gonna think? Or you know, somebody else that’s important to me has an opinion about it, right? So just noticing, when if failure comes a fear of failure comes up or making a mistake, just check yourself and see if there’s a way to just adjust that a little bit. One little action can make a really big difference in being able to like you said, Stacie, just take that next little step right. Absolutely. So we would love to hear any insights you have from doing the wheel. Email us at info@TLStransforms.com. And thank you so much for listening.
[Stacie Watson]
Thank you.
