[Alicia Davis] Okay, so if you are navigating change right now as a leader, as someone on a team, and you’re feeling wiped out from it, we really want to talk with you today, about some possible ways to restore yourself, because to get through challenging times, we got to be resilient, and those things tie together, don’t they? Stacie?
[Stacie Watson] They do. You know, I think as leaders and nonprofit organizations, especially these days, or maybe always, I don’t know, we’re always facing change. And you know, for many of us, it’s part and parcel of the work that we do. And so we show up and we face it head on, and we do what needs to be done. And you know that works for most of us for a period of time, and then, to your point, sometimes we might find ourselves feeling like, as my mother used to say, someone put a tap in me and drained out all my energy, right? Like, I just don’t feel like I have it to give. And this is where this idea of resiliency really comes in. And sometimes I think we take our resiliency a little bit for granted. We just imagine that it will be there when we need it to be there. But when we’re in a kind of persistent change, or this sort of ongoing, that we’re always trying to adapt, I think sometimes it’s helpful to take a moment to realize I have to restore myself in order to continue to show up that way.
[Alicia Davis] That’s right, and it’s different for each person. It’s different depending on the situation. It’s different depending on the time of day or week or month or year. It’s different depending on, you know, just depending on the dynamics of the people that are around you. Like, you know, one of the things that I say sometimes stays in sessions is sometimes, I think we take better care of our cell phones than we do taking care of our own minds and bodies and hearts, you know. It’s really interesting, we’re very specific about plugging it in and making sure it’s got a safe cover over it, right? And like, we always are, we always know where it is. It’s like, okay, well, how can we be a little bit intentional about that, about, like, when we really are feeling like we need to have a mental refresh, you know, like, what does that mean? Does that mean we need to listen to an inspirational podcast, or does that mean we need to binge-watch something on Netflix, right? So it’s like, or does it mean we need to just sit and kind of quietly breathe for a few minutes, right? Everybody’s a little bit different. And I think, you know, we always talk about intentionality and making really mindful choices. And I think it really applies in in these situations,
[Stacie Watson] It really does. And I think again, we can just sort of get into the habit of reacting. This is changing, and that is changing, and we’re sort of in a little bit of a reactive mode. And so one of the ways we can be more responsive is to try and notice, you know, notice the changes that we’re navigating. Notice how much energy those changes are taking, and then notice the ways that we can, to your point, restore ourselves, whether it’s the Netflix watching, whether it’s the breathing, whether it’s a walk outside, going to the gym… You know, again, just finding whatever works for you that allows you to sort of, just like you’re plugging that cell phone in, what can I do to kind of plug myself back in and get a little bit more of that ability to be resilient.
[Alicia Davis] That’s right, that’s right. So I’m Alicia Davis…
