So, Stacie, we wanted to build on the video that we did last week that was about decision-making.
Stacie Watson
Yes.
Alicia Davis
Right? And you know, in that video, we really talked a little bit more about how we make decisions as leaders with teams. We also just wanted to talk a little bit about how we make decisions individually as well, right?
Stacie Watson
Yeah, for sure. You know, I think we’re faced with all kinds of decisions, both personally and professionally. And I actually have, you know, four young adult children, and they are in the midst of making many what feel like really important life decisions about, you know, what to do after college and what type of job to pursue and whether to accept a job that’s been offered, you know, those types of things. And so it is, I think, helpful to take a moment and just think about, well, how do I make a decision for myself? And we’ve been doing some of that with our coaching clients, right?
Alicia Davis
Yeah, for sure. And we have this great tool that we both use and love, you know. And oftentimes, when we’re making a decision, we often think, “Oh, let’s do pros and cons, right?
Stacie Watson
Yes. Yeah.
Alicia Davis
The model that we use is a little bit expansive on that same idea, and it’s called the “Pain/Gain model.” And so, basically, what you’re considering is for the decision. So let’s say, you know, I’m trying to decide: do I stay in this job or move to that job, right?
Stacie Watson
Right.
Alicia Davis
Well, what’s the pain or the challenges about staying kind of the status quo where you are, and what are the benefits of staying where you are, and the same thing for the new situation, right? And basically, in the conversation or in the process, what you’re doing is you’re kind of getting everything out of your head about what’s happening, or, you know, what the possibilities are. We’re talking about the emotional, mental, and energetic impacts as well, right?
Stacie Watson
Yes, right. If we stick with the sort of job metaphor, the example that you were using, you know, there you might say, well, the new job would take an additional 20 or 30 minutes’ drive every day, so maybe that sort of feels like a con. But the gain, which again is a little bit deeper, is that I have an opportunity to really advance in the new organization, and I feel very aligned with the mission of the organization.
Alicia Davis
Right.
Stacie Watson
So the pain of the additional drive might be offset by that gain. So again, it’s like really trying to sort of think in a little bit of a deeper way about the implications of yes or no, or moving forward, or staying where I am, and it it’s a it’s a helpful exercise. And I think you and I both have seen clients find it very valuable.
Alicia Davis
Very valuable. And so, you know, if that’s something that you think, if you’re in the middle of making a decision about something, we’re certainly happy to share the tool with you. We’ll, you know, talk with you about it. So email us info@tlstransforms.com, and I’m Alicia Davis…
