The Spirit of Gratitude

What if we suggested that adding one more thing to your already full ‘to-do’ list might actually help you feel less overwhelmed? Sounds crazy!? Listen this week as we explore the restorative nature of gratitude and how, particularly in this season, it can be quite helpful!

[Alicia Davis] So, Stacie, last week was Thanksgiving. And you know, in this holiday time, it can often be really powerful to take these pauses and be thankful and have some gratitude about life and things, right? So we wanted to talk about that a little bit, just kind of in the spirit of the holidays,

[Stacie Watson] Yeah, you know, just over the next couple of weeks, I think we’re going to focus a little bit on kind of how we can tend to our own well-being in this very busy season. And I feel like Thanksgiving is such a nice reminder, or it can be, of the power of gratitude. You know, I remember going through kind of a gratitude journey a few years ago…

[Alicia Davis] Yeah, you did.

[Stacie Watson] … where every day I went through kind of a different activity related to gratitude. And one of the things that was part of every single day of that journey was just writing five to 10 things down on a piece of paper that I was grateful for. And, you know, one of the things I noticed when I went through that over 30 days was at the beginning, not that it was difficult, but I felt like the things I was grateful for were kind of basic, like, you know, grateful for a house, grateful for food to eat. Important things, no doubt. And just as I went through that process, it became a lot more nuanced, and I really noticed my gratitude in different ways throughout the month. And I’m curious. Alicia, why would that be? What do you think a practice like that sort of lends itself to deepening awareness?

[Alicia Davis] Well, I think two things, actually. I think one, wherever you focus your attention, that’s where your energy goes, and you also begin to notice the things that you are, whether it’s about writing them down or whether it’s about the feeling that you get in writing them down. You’re kind of focusing the mind, and you’re feeling it in the heart. And so the two things together, I think, really deepen both insight as well as that energetic shift that can happen when we focus on what we are appreciating and grateful for. So, yeah, you know, I think it’s a very simple practice that can, I think, be really significant, and how it shifts the way we interact with ourselves, with other people, and with the world around us.

[Stacie Watson] Absolutely. So we invite you, if this sounds like something that is of interest or might be helpful in terms of just helping slow things down a little bit. Just take a few moments at the beginning or the end of each day and jot down a few things for which you’re grateful, and just notice kind of the difference that you experience over a little bit of time.

[Alicia Davis] So as always, we’d love to hear from you. I’m Alicia Davis…

[Stacie Watson] I’m Stacie Watson…
