Surfing through Chaos

“You can’t control the waves, but you can learn to surf.” This wise statement comes from the well-known mindfulness teacher, Jon Kabat-Zinn – but what does it mean for those of us who experience feelings of constant chaos, or waves? Join us today for a discussion of how we can find moments of calm, no matter how high the waves.

Surfing through Chaos

[Alicia Davis] So I love the beach, Stacie, and I know you do, too. Have you ever been on the beach and you’re watching the little kids swimming, and all of a sudden this wave comes in, and they just get tackled by it, right? And they go rolling, and they come up sputtering. And, you know, doesn’t it feel like, sometimes that’s what like, work is like, life is like? We’re just getting hit with these waves, and we’re just trying to keep our head above water. We want to talk about that today, don’t we?

[Stacie Watson] We do. You know, there’s just, I think, so much attention right now on these ideas of self-care and well-being. And in some ways, I feel like those topics can feel like just more waves, right? More things to do, more things that I need to feel badly about if I’m not doing. And, you know, I think what we really wanted to just talk about is the fact that it’s probably not realistic for us to ever be in a space at work where there are no waves. You know, I think it’s just the nature of the work that we do, the nature of being a human being. So really, the question is, how do we find moments of calm amidst all that’s going on for us throughout the day? And how do we really dock into that and think about that as being kind of a well-being practice, as opposed to some kind of self-care list that we’re checking off?

[Alicia Davis] That’s, right?

[Stacie Watson] Does that make sense?

[Alicia Davis] Yeah, and it’s, you know, really about taking – we call them micro-moments – right? Micro practices. Like, how can you take one minute – you’ve got all the emails… before you start answering all your emails, can you take one breath and really focus? Before you go into a meeting, right, where you know there’s going to be a lot of things, can you take just one minute and organize your thoughts, right? If something gets really overwhelming, can you step out for five minutes and and maybe just take a little walk, right? It’s really considering, what are the things that help you come back to your own, what I like to call, your center, or to help you feel grounded? Right? Your feet are on the floor. You’re kind of back. You can also notice through your five senses. That’s another way to just take a moment or two to bring a little bit more calm and focus to yourself, right?

[Stacie Watson] Yeah, you know, I just think sometimes we feel like to be able to find calm, we have to take time off of work, and maybe we need to go on a yoga retreat. And those things are wonderful, and if we can do that, I think it can be very helpful. And I think what we’re offering today is just the possibility that we can have these moments even amidst what might be a chaotic workday, right?

[Alicia Davis] That’s right. And if that’s something that you’re interested in learning more about, we’ve got our Finding Calm in the Chaos: Decreasing Stress through Mindfulness session coming up in our Learning Academy on August 27th, and you’re welcome to take a look at it – academy.TLStransforms.com and I’m Alicia Davis…

[Stacie Watson] I’m Stacie Watson…

[Alicia Davis] And we are coaches, and trainers, and team building facilitators, and we love working with teams around all things that are wellbeing. Feel free to reach out to us anytime. Thanks so much.

[Stacie Watson] Thank you.
