[Alicia Davis] If you are a leader, and you have found yourself sitting in meetings for hours, maybe even you spend much of your time in meetings, we would love to share with you a couple of thoughts about how to make those meetings more effective.

[Stacie Watson] Absolutely. You know, if you heard our newsletter video last week, we talked about how we do some internal preparation for the communication that we do with a team or with a person, and how important it is to really consider that. Well, the same holds true when you’re with a group – and you are a group of people who have come together for a meeting.

[Alicia Davis] That’s right.

[Stacie Watson] And, you know, the preparation before the meeting, but also during the meeting, you know, what are we here for? Is everyone clear about that? Do we have the right people in the room? How will we make decisions? Who will be making the decisions? And maybe most important of all, what are the clear next steps that everyone in the room understands and is in alignment around? You know, it again, can sound very simple and straightforward. And how many times Alicia, do we work with teams, and it becomes very clear to us pretty quickly that a lot of those steps aren’t taking place?

[Alicia Davis] That’s right. I mean, it can be so easy in meetings to get derailed, to get sidetracked to like, go down a whole nother path. And it really takes some skill and some intention to bring it back and stay focused on whatever that topic is. And so, you know, I think that what we really want to invite you today to consider is one, is there a meeting that you’re in that you’re not finding as effective? And what if any of those steps might you try, either, you know, during the meeting, to maybe help it feel a little bit more effective? I think we could probably all stand to take a look at our meetings and identify the meetings that feel really productive, and we feel really good when we come out of… and the meetings maybe where we don’t feel that way. And maybe some of these actions might be helpful in any of them.
