Delegation

“I really should delegate more than I do.”  We hear this kind of statement all the time, and yet, we find it’s often very difficult for leaders to move beyond the statement, toward action.  If you can relate to this challenge, we invite you to listen to this week’s video!  You aren’t alone!

Delegation

Alicia Davis
Okay, Stacie, when we as leaders, whether we’re beginning or whether we’ve been working a long time… Delegation, delegation… is one of those things that we know is a good idea, right? Frees up time for us. And yet, how many of us actually do it consistently and maybe even well? What do you think about that?

Stacie Watson
Yeah, you know, this is a module that we are, a topic that we included in our Elevating Skills for Experienced Leaders program for that very reason, right? We all understand the value of delegation for all the reasons. And yet, when you sit down with leaders, and you mention the word delegation, there’s a lot of well, I should do more, but I don’t, right?

Alicia Davis
Right.

Stacie Watson
And you know, having kind of been around this topic and talked to a lot of leaders in the time that, you know, I’ve done the work I’ve done, and I know you’ve done the work that you’ve done, it’s become really apparent to me that there’s a lot that gets in the way of delegation that sort of sits under the covers a little bit. You know, it’s not necessarily what we assume is the reason we’re not delegating, and it’s really not until we kind of uncover that that it is very difficult to delegate. Do you want to kind of talk about some of those things that sort of sit maybe under the surface, but really drive the behavior?

Alicia Davis
Yeah, I mean, we hear it right in sessions. It’s very much like, well, the first one usually is, “My staff already has too much to do, I don’t want to burden them anyway…” Right? Which is valid, and yet, you know, there are ways to do it, maybe it’s even delegating something small, right, versus a whole task that might even be helpful. You know, I think another one is, you know, “I can just do it faster myself.” Right? It’ll take me a longer time to train someone. And while that may be true to some degree in the beginning, over the long term, it would be better, right?

Stacie Watson
Right.

Alicia Davis
So, and, and I just think, you know, I know this for myself, I like to do it a certain way, I have a certain standard of the way I want it done, and so is somebody else going to meet that standard? So I think these are some of the things that, you know, to your point, we often don’t take a few minutes to really consider, well, “Why am I really not asking a person to do some aspect of the task, if not all of it?’

Stacie Watson
Yeah. So you know, if you’re watching this today, we would invite you to just think about what fills your time. Think about what might be something that could be delegated, or, to your point, Alicia, a portion of something that could be delegated. And before you even put a plan in place to delegate it, if you’re not quite sure you’re ready, just be curious about why that might be and let us know your thoughts.

Alicia Davis
Curiosity is key. So absolutely, feel free to let us know at info@tlstransforms.com, and I’m Alicia Davis…

Stacie Watson
I’m Stacie Watson…

Alicia Davis
And thanks so much for listening.

Stacie Watson
Thank you.
