Alicia Davis
Okay, Stacie, so we are talking team emotional intelligence part two today…
Stacie Watson
Right. Right!
Alicia Davis
What are we talking about?
Stacie Watson
Well, so again, thinking about emotional intelligence for anyone who’s done any study in emotional intelligence. Last week, we talked about noticing and how we can notice on our team what’s going on or how people are doing. So, if you’ve missed that, we invite you to go back and check that out. And so the second part of the emotional intelligence process is sort of the way that we can regulate. In other words, let’s say we notice that there is heightened tension or there are some higher levels of anxiety, or perhaps it’s showing up like burnout. And so we want to bring some kind of emotional regulation to the team, so how do we do this?
Alicia Davis
Well, there are, again, a number of ways, and I think the first one that you said that is related to last week is we have to name the elephant in the room.
Stacie Watson
Right.
Alicia Davis
So you know, sometimes we’re in these meetings, and there’s stress, and there’s tension, and we’re just talking and trying to work it through, and it’s really uncomfortable. Part of regulation is saying, okay, everybody, we’re all committed to figuring this out. Let’s just take a pause. Let’s take a breath. Let’s just step back, and can we even just name what is happening? What’s going on with people? Why are the reactions happening? And you have to do that with some curiosity and some commitment from everyone to be really interested in aligning.
Stacie Watson
Yeah. It feels very connected to, I think, often when we notice emotions become dysregulated on teams, there’s some correlation to change, right? Something has changed that people have big feelings about, and so I think there’s also an opportunity for team members to talk about how they experience change personally, and then how do we experience change on our team? And again, to your point, being able to really normalize this is really important, so we’re…
Alicia Davis
… and yes, can I just add to that, Stacie?
Stacie Watson
Yes –
Alicia Davis
One thing is to focus on healthy reactions to change.
Stacie Watson
Yes!
Alicia Davis
This is exactly that, right?
Stacie Watson
Yeah, definitely. So again, we’re referencing some inspiration from a book by Dr. Jean Greaves, Team Emotional Intelligence 2.0, and so we would love to hear from you, you know, if you practiced noticing last week, great. And then, if you’re bringing any strategies for how we might regulate the team’s emotional state, we would love to hear them as well.
Alicia Davis
That’s right. So, please reach out to us – info@tlstransforms.com. And I’m Alicia Davis…
