Team EI: Relationship Building (Part Three)

As we close the conversation on Team Emotional Intelligence, part three focuses on how we build effective and meaningful relationships within the team AND outside of the team. Join us as we offer ideas for solidifying strong working relationships within the team while also building collaborative relationships with those external to the team!

Okay, Stacie… Team intelligence, emotional intelligence. Once again, part three. And today, what are we going to talk about?

Stacie Watson
Well, today we’re really focusing on kind of that part of Daniel Goleman’s model, which is all about relationship building. So if you weren’t able to catch parts one and two, we invite you to go back and listen to those, where we really talked about as a team, how we can notice how we’re doing, and then how we can sort of regulate ourselves. Again, thinking about the team. So today, we’re really focusing on how to take all of that awareness and think about how to build relationships on the team. How do we cultivate connection among the team members? And then Dr. Greaves, in the book Team EI 2.0, which is what we’re referring to, talks a little bit about how you can think about that more expansively, right? Not just internal to our team, but externally. So, what are some of the ideas that are offered?

Alicia Davis
Well, so for the internal strategies, I think there are a number of things that we talk about too, like really valuing the small things. Like celebrating the successes as a team, like really focusing on encouraging each other, focusing on what the team can control. So, there are lots of ideas, like being direct and having challenging conversations in respectful ways. So it’s very much taking the self-awareness, the team awareness, and focusing it on really strengthening the team.

Stacie Watson
Right.

Alicia Davis
And external strategies, right, whether you are interacting with other teams within your organization or your client-facing, you know, it is very much about how do we collaborate, like really being intentional about collaborating with each other. How do we build bridges, right? How do we, how do we align, whether it’s with other teams or with external groups, around our vision, mission, and values of the organization? So lots of ideas, and those are some of the key ones that just really inspired us.

Stacie Watson
Absolutely, so as we’ve done in the past couple of weeks, we invite you to think about how you proactively and intentionally build relationships on your team. What are some things that you do? You probably do things without even recognizing them as relationship-building activities, and yet that’s what you’re doing. So, what are you doing? And then what do you do to build those relationships and connections external to the team? We’d love to hear from you. I know that we inspire each other when we share our ideas and strategies, so we look forward to hearing from you.

Alicia Davis
